A minimum of 64 individuals died in a law enforcement action targeting the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the area's records.

Four police officers lost their lives during Operation Containment in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials stated. Over 80 individuals were detained.

Violent conflicts erupted when about 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on the morning of the operation. The Red Command responded with shooting, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, officials stated.

The UN Human Rights Office said it was "appalled" by the security action, urging "prompt and effective investigations".

Raid Aftermath

The slum neighborhoods near Rio's airport is regarded as the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organizations.

State officials stated at least 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Numerous individuals were wounded, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Community members have compared the elevated neighborhood - housing around 300,000 residents - to a "battlefield" since the operation began.
