RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several approach shafts providing entry to the site... early reports are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he added. "Including them were numerous UK service members on duty over the holidays. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, shows how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
