Donald Trump's Framework of Punishment and Favor

The ex-president's voracious appetite for revenge has swiftly morphed into a methodical system. During the year since his election, the leader's fury and caprices have assumed the shape of official policies in a manner analogous to past dictatorial systems. Federal officials who resist his demands are immediately fired and replaced by loyalists. Political officials who challenge him encounter indictment, trial and sanctions. Opponents have been labeled under presidential orders as “anti-American”, “opposed to religious values” and “against free markets”, and threatened with prosecution as “security threats”.

Government Institutions Transformed

Each situation involving legal action of Trump's enemies and immunity for supporters displays its own particular features. Yet, regardless of their individual form, they exemplify examples of what has developed as a systematic approach. Such incidents are not coincidental. Trump's purge of DoJ prosecutors and FBI personnel, alongside his appointment of loyalists in high-level posts, started quickly, promptly took on a regularity, and has now been shaped into a system. Federal prosecutors and the law enforcement agency have been restructured into political agencies under his clear direction to execute his directives. Wrongdoing has been rendered normal. It represents the retribution system.

Management is more concerned with targeting the President's perceived opponents than they are with defending our national security.

Within the System

The beginnings of this framework has been exposed in the legal complaint of three former senior law enforcement executives lodged in September in the federal court in DC against agency head an administration figure and attorney general another official for illegal termination in “a effort of revenge against them for what Defendants considered to be a refusal to show proper allegiance”. The document states that one official, the previous interim leader, details a conversation in which the director “openly confessed the impropriety of his actions”.

He had sought to defend agency personnel from being dismissed, the filing alleges. The director informed him that “they” – perceived by the official to be the executive branch and federal prosecutors – had ordered him to fire anyone who they identified as having worked on a criminal investigation against the president. The document goes on: “Patel stated that he had to terminate the personnel his superiors told him to dismiss, because his chance to keep his own role relied on the ouster of the agents who worked on matters involving the leader. The director commented that there was nothing he or the official could do to halt these or any other firings, because ‘the agency attempted to place the leader in detention and he recalls it clearly.’” After the official advised the director he was breaking the agency's own regulations, the director reportedly said “he recognized that and he realized the nature of the swift terminations were almost certainly unlawful”.

Widespread Effects

Since his claimed confession to Driscoll, the Department of Justice and the FBI have been dismantled and redirected for Trump's retribution system. Multiple of the bureau's top officials were terminated or compelled to leave in the first days of the presidency. Approximately numerous professional attorneys at the justice department have agreed to a “voluntary departure plan”. At least seven DoJ lawyers, among them those in the southern district of New York, resigned in protest over what they considered as ideological pressure in dropping the criminal prosecution against the local official, the mayor, in return for his cooperation with the administration's Immigration and Customs Enforcement detentions of migrants. The public integrity section of the department, which manages ethical violations, has been reduced to a handful of lawyers. The rights protection unit has been severely reduced: the majority of its staff has left. One-third of top officials at the department have resigned. The section implementing environmental law has experienced the exit of half its leadership.

Rewards and Penalties

In the mayor's situation, the interim prosecutor for the federal division, Danielle Sassoon, resigned in dissent against what she described as the “exchange”. Tom Homan, his “immigration leader,” was present as the enforcer with the mayor on television to state: “Unless he complies, I'll reappear in the city.”. And, a former official, earlier the senior DoJ official and a ex-lawyer, who brokered the arrangement, was given an court role, a likely pathway to the judicial branch.

The president's protection for wrongdoings perpetrated while in government, granted by the unprecedented ruling of the GOP-led on the supreme court, thus blocking his prosecution over the Capitol riot and preserving his political viability for the 2024 election, is the cornerstone on which he relies to protect his stalwarts. Given this protection, he has been empowered to enable misconduct. The effect of the court judgment infuses his administration and the GOP completely. Trump v United States has metastasized.
