The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
