What's Inside the Case Henry Unlocks in Stranger Things?
During the bulk of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned inside a mental fortress built from the recollections of Vecna. The search for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—a discovery that may just hold the means to overcome him permanently.
Heads Up: This article reveals crucial plot points for *Stranger Things* season 5, volume 2.
A Journey Into the Mine Shaft
When she finds Max in the world known as Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device found in Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies not within the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.
They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma wasn't just a defensive killing.
Similar to other plot points in volume 2, the full story behind the mine shaft incident is detailed in the theatrical production The First Shadow.
The Philadelphia Experiment and Stolen Research
The play reveals the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which reportedly teleported a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension known as the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the captain, who came back in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.
This man's son, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this phenomenon in Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Communist spies, who were keen to start their version of the tests. The man in the tunnel was that very thief.
The Briefcase's Contents
Given what is revealed about Brenner's work, the container would assuredly have some of the altered blood. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would genetically impart to the test subjects under Brenner's care.
A second theory, the box could have held strange particles that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. The prequel shows that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he fights the whispers of a sinister presence, similar to how Will was possessed by the Mind Flayer in season 2.
Confronting Terror
Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine highlights how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. Even as he orchestrates the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a showdown between Vecna and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to become stronger.
Will's growth has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what his enemy truly fears, and this may grant a decisive edge in the endgame conflict ahead.
